A month of Remembrance...

Welcome to the month of November! Here are some of our main curriculum goals this month:

Literacy Goals: English
We will be reading and writing Narratives!

Students will be learning about story elements: Characters, Setting, Problem/Solution. We will talk about two of the reasons why authors write narratives...to entertain and to inform.

The students did a great job with their biography projects and presentations in October! They really enjoyed learning about a famous person and learned a lot from each other during the presentations. Thanks so much for your support! I really liked the creativity some students showed in wearing special clothing and bringing props. Blog posts about the biographies can be found by clicking on this link and this link.

Français

This month students will be learning about "les verbes pronominaux" which will help them recount their daily routines as well as the daily events of their family members.

Thank you so much for reading with your child each night and for helping them practise their word work - I really appreciate our partnership in your child's learning! I have already witnessed progress in both French and English reading skills:)

Our next independent reading project will be done in French! It will include a narrative (fiction) book report and presentation. As we did last month, the book report will be completed at school and then students will be given a few days to practise for their oral presentation. The oral presentations will take place later in the month.

Math Goals:
During the first part of November we will finish up with our number sense unit. Thank you to those that were able to attend our Family Math night! Hopefully you were able to take away some ideas for supporting your child with their math learning at home.

During the month of November we will also explore the use of diagrams and charts to sort, classify and graph information. This is our Data Management unit!

Grade 3 math word: MODE

The mode of a set of numbers is the one that occurs most often. So, in the set {1,5,7,5,9}, the mode is 5 because there are 2 fives and only one of each of the others.

Grade 4 students will even learn about Stem & Leaf plots as well as double bar graphs.
Grade 4 math word: MEDIAN
To find the Median, place the numbers you are given in value order and find the middle number. Example: find the Median of {13, 23, 11, 16, 15, 10, 26}. Put them in order: {10, 11, 13, 15, 16, 23, 26} The middle number is 15, so the median is 15. (If there are two middle numbers, you average them.)

Étude Sociale:

  • Grade 3 students will begin learning about the different land forms that make up the beauty of our province (with Mme S.)

  • Grade 4 students are doing a research project on one of the provinces (with Mme C.T.)

Religion:

Thanks so much for your generosity in sending food donations for our Thanksgiving mass in October. Thanks also for helping your child prepare for their mass readings. Our class did a fantastic job!
Our virtue this month is "JUSTICE" - We will be discussing the idea of being fair & making the right choices.

We will be reading a REMEMBRANCE Day story of peace and hope called "A child's garden."

Students will discover the fear and troubling times a young boy faces during a time of war in his country.
This story will give us the opportunity identify and illustrate what it means to have freedom
and why this is an important human gift received from God which requires us to be responsible in its use.

Family Life:
As we continue using our data binders to self-reflect and discuss the importance of homework and class work students will learn to:
Grade 3: Recognize the value of care and effort in their work
Grade 4: Recognize the value of keeping commitments
